The Day Replayed – Individual goalscorers are capturing all the attention at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2010 in Germany and it’s becoming a battle to see who can become Top Gun. On the day when the host nation and Korea DPR both booked their quarter-final places with emphatic victories, and the tournament prepared to wave goodbye to Costa Rica and New Zealand, who both suffered a second successive defeat, there was further demonstration of goalscoring prowess from three strikers.
Two second-half strikes from substitute Marina Makanza carried France to victory over the Costa Ricans and that puts her on three goals for the tournament. On the same total is Antonia Goransson of Sweden who followed up her double-strike against New Zealand on Tuesday with the goal that earned the Scandinavians a point against Brazil in Bielefeld. Although Brazil rallied to earn a draw with a second-half penalty, it is all they have to show after the first two games and, considering As Canarinhas have always done well in this tournament, they have a fight on to reach the next stage.
No such problems for Germany and Korea DPR however. They are the first sides into the quarter-finals and will have the opportunity to rest players for their final group games. Alexandra Popp scored again to set Germany on the path to victory – she also scored twice against Costa Rica – while the other player to score three so far is Korea Republic hot-shot Ji So-Yun.
